Poplar is a versatile, lightweight tonewood used frequently in drum making. It provides a warm, well-balanced sound with soft highs, mellow mids, and boosted low-end.  Poplar absorbs higher frequencies more easily than denser woods like maple or birch, resulting in a smooth, mellow, and controlled tone.  Its softer composition gives it a slightly boosted low end, which produces a great fundamental note and a solid, punchy sound.  Because it isn't as rigid as harder exotic woods, poplar naturally yields a shorter note with fewer wild overtones, making it ideal for quick sticking and studio recording.  Poplar was historically the wood of choice for many of the most prized vintage drums from the mid-20th century. Many high-end boutique and vintage-style modern drums still use all-poplar constructions for a distinctive "woody" and classic resonance.
